In 2014 I stepped away from full-time employment to care for my youngest son, who requires additional support. It was a deliberate decision, made in the knowledge that some work cannot be outsourced.
The years that followed asked for patience, organisation and calm problem-solving. I learned to plan around uncertainty, to advocate for someone who cannot always advocate for himself, and to keep going when there was no manual. Alongside caregiving, I renovated our home from planning to execution — budget, materials, timing, trades — took on occasional freelance web development projects, and designed and built RegexPilot, a macOS app that shipped on the Mac App Store in 2026.
With my son now in daytime support and more independent, I am ready to return to professional life. I am not asking anyone to overlook those years. I hope employers will recognise what those years have given me: a broader perspective, a steadier hand, and a deep appreciation for work that is useful and well done.
What those years built
- 01
Patience under pressure
Calm, consistent attention when the day does not go to plan.
- 02
Planning and advocacy
Coordinating care, appointments and professionals; making the case for what is needed.
- 03
Practical problem solving
Renovating a home end to end; learning by doing, budgeting, and finishing what I start.
- 04
Sustained curiosity
RegexPilot is the clearest result: a product designed, built and shipped solo.
With RegexPilot shipped and my son now in daytime support, I am ready to bring that experience to a team — full-time or part-time, in IT support, application engineering, web development or a blend of these.
I share this chapter without disclosing details that belong to my son.
